There was a thread on here a while back that went massively off course (by design by me, it was getting a bit toxic) and starting chatting about ancestry etc.

Well, i finally got my results back. It was a cheaper Ancestry.com test rather than one of those really in depth ones that tells you how much neolithic DNA you have. But, with that cavaet I came back with:

51% Irish
27% English and northern Europe
22% Germanic

How bloody boring. Basically half Irish, a quarter native Britian and quarter anglo-saxon. I was assuming there would at least be some random French, Viking or Roman in there. Maybe something from eastern europe perhaps.

But no, 78% native to this isle and then a bit of "new" DNA from our German cousins.

At least this gives me a reason to support Tuchel's appointment as England boss. He's basically my cousin if we go back far enough.

English isn’t native in that context surely - Angles were Danish/German?

This is true, the idea of "the english" was created after the Angles, Saxon's and Jutes arrived.

I believe they more trying to show the location of where you DNA is from i.e. from what is now known as England. After all, most national borders are a relatively recent invention.

To Meerkats point above, I'm never quite sure at what point in history they decide the snapshot is for that DNA. My ancestry composition has changed 5 times since I did it, though admittedly it becomes more granular each time.

Mine is currently 62% Irish (Co. Cork), 28% South East Italy, then the rest made up of France, Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Scotland.
