From my reading all we really cared about with the Chagos Islands was the military base and we've effectively kept that so I'm not sure in this case Brexit made much difference imo. Also 'lost' is an emotive way to put it, I think our Govt lost an irritating situation whilst keeping what they wanted.

For example, this will make no difference where the Falklands are concerned. What the Falkland Islanders want will be the defining factor.

The Chagos islands are 300 miles south of the Maldives, which had traditional links to the islands. But the UN insist they should be part of Mauritius, which is 1000km further away.
There never were indigenous Chagossians - they are decendents of slaves and indentured labourers who were taken to the islands.
The UN is virulently anti-colonial yet accepts the borders the colonialists drew to create a new colonialism - they spew nonsense about the Falklands but then support Indonesia's brutal colonialism in places such as West Papua, just because the Dutch grabbed it all into one colony.

No, because Reunion was uninhabited when the French settled it. I think the French get round some of the anti-colonial issues because such places are actually part of France, not colonies.

As with the Falklands the important thing is that you can't return them to an indigenous population as there wasn't one - its not like the Aborigines or Maoris. Its about as colonial as any country spreading out as they expanded and explored.
Giving the Falklands to the Argentinians would be perverse as an 'anti-colonial' measure - even if you take the latest date when the UK took indisputable de facto control of the islands that was decades before the non-indigenous Argentians invaded and committed genocide so that they could colonise what is now southern Argentina.

All that has happened is the Chagossians have been handed over from one colonial power to another - and the Mauritians have made it illegal for anyone anywhere to dispute Mauritian sovereignty so the Chagossians are unable to demand self-rule.
