What does “unsustainably high immigration” mean? It seems contrary to have an opinion on the Immigration level but not on the overall population level. Why are people so fussed about the level of immigration coming to this country and not numbers leaving/birth/death rate (the 3 other factors that make up the change in the uk population?). 02-06-2024, 03:25 PM in response to #50485 Uptheshots Wrote: Fair enough. I don’t have a particular view either. You can think about more than one thing at once. "Unsustainably high immigration" - the clue is sort of in the name. It would be a level of immigration above that which causes negative consequences for the country and the people that live in it. 02-06-2024, 03:49 PM in response to #50474 Uptheshots Wrote: I don’t think we do particularly. I think we’d need to readjust but on balance surely more space per person is better? Not many superrich people buy terraced houses. 02-06-2024, 04:18 PM in response to #50491 Baldman Wrote: Would it be bad if the population went down? If it was due to less babies (who will support the elderly generation in the future) or less immigrants (active in the country/community now) then yes it is bad. Less elderly people, Perhaps not a problem. The issue is not the amount of resources to go around the population, it’s the uneven way it’s distributed. 02-06-2024, 04:22 PM (This post was last modified: 02-06-2024, 04:23 PM by Uptheshots.) in response to #50487 Leeds Sandgrounder Wrote: You can think about more than one thing at once. I’ve always found it a pretty nebulous concept. Immigration as a stand alone figure without context doesn’t mean a lot/isn’t very relevant IMO. Immigrants are just people, just a selection of the population. That’s why it baffles me that people get so het up about “immigrants”, why delineate them? 02-06-2024, 04:24 PM in response to #50497 Uptheshots Wrote: I’ve always found it a pretty nebulous concept. Because you can choose whether they live here or not, and you can't with British citizens. 02-06-2024, 04:38 PM in response to #50499 Leeds Sandgrounder Wrote: Because you can choose whether they live here or not, and you can't with British citizens. You can with the elderly, we do to a minor extent. Over 90s not having major ops, some younger than that only having certain resources directed towards them, DNR etc etc. arguably it should be more pronounced. Just let all people that want to come here, come here. We more or less do this anyway, albeit with a load of racist rhetoric. We could spend time and money filtering & stopping some people coming here which is not cost effective and doesn’t work well or We can spend the same time & money helping integrate people that come here and making them part of the community. For the same cost the 2nd option gives you much better outcomes. Remember, as studies have shown immigration is of a net benefit. 02-06-2024, 04:43 PM in response to #50505 Uptheshots Wrote: Just let all people that want to come here, come here.
