Everyone furiously debating this like it is going to happen. 😂
Why announce this now? Because his U-Turn on tuition fees a couple of days ago is getting flak. So instead promise something for the youth which doesn't cost money and silently scrap it later. In a few months it will be "This is not the right time when we have so much to fix. I'm sure the public would much rather we focus our efforts on fixing more urgent issues like the NHS/Boats/Insert some other distraction" then the issue will never be spoken of again A lot like the New Deal for Working People which has been watered down so much it was described today by one Union as having "more holes in it that Swiss Cheese". No increase in maternity/paternity leave No ban on Zero-Hours contracts No increase in sick pay It's all rather shit. 25-05-2024, 05:26 PM in response to #48651 25-05-2024, 05:30 PM in response to #48647 Gary Bauress Wrote: I've no enormous view on it either way but don't have too much problem with it. Two extra years won't reshape the franchise as much as people think, much in the same way no-one spends much time thinking how specifically increased life expectancies have reshaped the franchise when in fact it has on average increased by ten years since the mid seventies which research indicates will have helped the Tories. Yes very good. I would generally agree. It’s obviously naked gerrymandering by Labour, and arguably the least appropriate time to give the vote to sixteen year olds in my lifetime (given they have to be in education until 18 now and can’t fight in the army). But I don’t think it will have much impact. And if it injects a little bit of idealism and hope into the electorate to counterbalance the cynicism and self interest of us older folk then all the better. 25-05-2024, 05:30 PM in response to #48648 Leeds Sandgrounder Wrote: But they can get married, join the army and pay tax. I'm not sure why they should not be allowed to have a say. The law changed and now you have to be 18 to get married. 25-05-2024, 05:34 PM in response to #48655 Barnet Ben Wrote: Everyone furiously debating this like it is going to happen. 😂 It will be very interesting to see how the first term goes. NoncePot will have his moment on 5th of July, but I suspect your concerns will be realised over the Parliament. If they get a second term (and they really should, unless he fouls it up) then you’d expect more left leaning policies a la Blair 25-05-2024, 05:37 PM in response to #48661 Baldman Wrote: It will be very interesting to see how the first term goes. Debt is so much higher already, and AIUI you couldn’t get away with Brown’s PFI conjuring? 25-05-2024, 05:46 PM in response to #48663 |
