There's an area of York called 'New Earswick', built by Joseph Rowntree for his workers and being a Quaker banned alcohol sales in the village so there's never been a pub and the local convenience store doesn't have an 'out sales' licence due to an ancient bylaw.
When their rugby league club formed the work around in the club for beer was tombola, seems one could win a can of beer when one played and it circumvented the licencing laws though they did later get granted a licence.
I played for the chocolate factory rugby union club and the (different) clubhouse was dry due to the Quakers, we had to use a pub for after match food and drink.
