Well, in terms of ecological classifications (which for some reason the consideration of impact on humans doesn't seem to fall under) they've been going backwards for six years, particularly in England.
90%+ of the pollution comes from agriculture and water companies. The amount of chemicals in the systems are increasing. Nobody is doing anything about it. I imagine this largely due to 1) the landowners/companies wanting to limit the time spent on infrastructure and disposal in order to maximise profit and 2) the government screwing over the organisations which they have put in place to monitor and act.
I don't think there's any point in comparisons really. It's not on an upward trajectory and that's the main thing.
