Am I right in thinking that ecological status and bathing status are rather different things?
ie you can clean up a river such that its pretty good for wildlife whilst still having a bit too much poo for humans to swim in.
Pretty sure I read this in a case study of building a new overflow structure. Actually stopping all poo discharges in deluge circumstances would be ridiculously expensive, but those discharges were not an environmental problem - just a leisure problem.
In a deluge the amount of poo doesn't rise but the amount of rainwater is vast so the poo is very dilute.
