This is obviously a disaster for Windermere, but feels a bit anecdoty. Our waters are apparently much cleaner overall than they were in the nineties and early noughties and I remember when I was young the Thames was classified as a dead river.
But it feels like there’s a load of investment needed. And given where interest rates have gone, I’m not sure this is best done through government ownership.
I think it's fair to say that it takes longer to clean up our waters than it does to shit them up.
No matter the history, the water quality levels in the UK (particularly anywhere aside than Scotland) aren't acceptable.
This is almost wholly down to two things; water companies and agriculture*. I'm pretty sure the government could sort these areas out if they could be arsed. Nationalisation and grants/subsidies/heavy fines to the landowners who have a carefree attitude.
