Boring but unhelpful answer: probably depends on the individual school/head.
We took the kids out of school for three days just prior to Easter to go to Disneyland because the flights were cheaper. Had to fill out a form requesting taking them out, which is for the local authority’s benefit and showed the request was officially denied. However the head then conspiratorially took me aside and said the kids would be marked down as an authorised absence. Same thing happened to a friend who took his daughter out for two weeks to go to Singapore, although that was because he had to go there for work (but he has family out there).
TL;DR: no harm in asking.
