It's a shame to be elected to office you (normally) have to be affiliated to a party.
Andy Street was easily the most qualified candidate and if he could have run as an independent and won he would have - but without the 20% core of Tory/Labour voters who only ever look at the party name, it is futile.
Would be an interesting experiment to run a Mayoral contest between six independents each standing on their own proposals, with no party affiliation. Would probably lead to a better standard of elected representatives too.
